For more than a decade, Medicaid has been driving health coverage growth in America. Since 2014, 40 states have expanded their Medicaid programs under the Affordable Care Act to cover low-income adults. During the pandemic, continuous Medicaid coverage kept the uninsured rate at historic lows. Medicaid, the nation’s largest health insurance program, covers nearly one in five Americans: adults, children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with disabilities.
Restricting access to this lifesaving program through work requirements or drastic funding cuts puts the health of millions at risk. It should be no surprise that most adults on Medicaid are working, many with two or more jobs. Having coverage is a backbone of strong employment, ensuring that people are healthy and able to work.
