RWJF is defending and advancing the fundamental American values of diversity, equity, and inclusion with resolve and urgency.

In a moment of retrenchment and backsliding, we are moving forward with increased investments to diversify the health professions; supporting the legal, communications, and organizing efforts of partners working toward racial equity; and funding the preservation of critical health research, particularly data broken down by racial and ethnic subgroups. These actions will improve health for all people.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Core to Our Mission

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts create access and opportunity for people who have historically faced greater barriers to living their healthiest lives—barriers that we must dismantle to achieve a future where health is no longer a privilege, but a right. We are pursuing this future through three ambitious goals built on the promise of diversity, equity, and inclusion:

  • We advocate for a healthcare system that provides respectful, high-quality care for everyone and a Public Health System that works together with communities to dismantle structural racism as a root cause of health disparities in America.
  • We envision flourishing communities where everyone has access to clean, safe drinking water and safe, stable housing; where jobs pay a living wage; where we have torn down the walls of segregation and all residents receive the respect and dignity they deserve.
  • We seek to build an economy that invests in families and values people for more than what they contribute to economic production; where all forms of care are accessible and affordable for families, and caregivers are valued for the critical role they play in our society.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Strengthens Democracy

Racial equity is key to a stable and thriving democracy where everyone feels a sense of belonging and inclusion.  The forces that sow racial inequality divide people and weaken community bonds, opening the door to authoritarianism.

How We Practice Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Diversity, equity, and inclusion is fundamental to everything we do and everything we seek to achieve. Within our organization, we are examining our past to learn lessons that can guide our ability to advance intersectional racial equity and justice. We are building an organizational culture of belonging for our employees. We are codifying systems, policies, practices, and partnerships that will help to hold us accountable to our diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments. And most importantly, we are explicitly addressing structural racism and other inequities through our grantmaking and investments.

Reaffirming Our Shared Vision

“RWJF supports thousands of organizations and networks working to advance our generational goals—dozens of whom are specifically focused on the emerging and sustained legal threats to racial diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
